Hello October

Gypsophila bouquets on the kitchen table, tied with gardeners twine.
Noodles, looking like a fierce little lion cub in the morning sun (notice the little tongue peeking out ha). Her long ear fur always makes me giggle!
'All good things are wild and free'. One of my favourite quotes!

October beginning has made me feel very excited for Autumn (and Halloween). I'm excited to go out and photograph pumpkins in national trust gardens and to wear my big fluffy parka and drink hazelnut hot chocolates.

What's your favourite thing about Autumn?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

* Yankee Candles - ScentedCandleShop.com

This has been my first delve into the world of Yankee candles! I always see so many lovely looking ones on Instagram, blogs and Youtube accounts, but for some reason I have never bought one for myself... although I have been to known to send them as gifts (they make good Christmas pressies).

So when The scented Candle Shop got in touch to see if I would like to try out some of their Yankee Candles I was very excited! I chose two very festive scents because I just love all things Christmas related, so Warm Spice and Spiced orange made their way to my doorstep a few days later.

They smell so lovely when you first open the lid, they are very sweet and definitely make me think of Christmas. With a lot of candles I have found that they smell very nice before you burn them but once you light them you can't smell it, but with these candles they make the whole room smell lovely! That's the most important part to me, whether you can smell them when they are burining (although I don't mind a pretty jar).

I would definitely recommend these gorgeous candles, and they are currently on 'Save 10%' so they would be perfect for Christmas presents for family and friends. I would love to know your Yankee candle recommendations!

Yummy Cookies - Recipe

Good evening everyone! Here is a recipe that I saw on 'Milk Bubble Tea's' blog, I thought the cookie base looked really yummy and I have done lots of Becky's recipes before and they are always amazing, so I used the cookie recipe to bake normal cookies instead of a base for the icing like Becky did. They came out really yummy and I recommend them!

I hope you like this style of post, I thought I would try out something new instead of always writing the recipe out at the bottom, so let me know which kind you prefer! This one took me quite a while but I really love the way it's turned out.

My first illustration

It's just a little blog post from me today, but I wanted to show you all my first illustration. I found my tablet and pen for the computer so I wanted to try drawing something in Photoshop and this was the result, I'm really pleased with how it turned out!

Also, don't forget that I am now offering blog designs for £20! It includes a header, a blog button and full layout. You could even have an illustrated header with pictures in like above, let me know if you would like one by sending me an email to beckyhp@me.com

Life lately

 1. I finally saved up to buy these converse but they rub my feet so badly! 2, 3, 4.  I went with my friend Amy to a local cafe that does the best ice cream milkshakes, mint chohy chip anyone?
 5. I took a photo of the vending machine at college so I could compare it to the other one to see which was best, (the secret diary of a choco holic) 6. Pumpkin fell in the neighbours pond and we had to give him a bath. 7. I bought some henna and got carried away and henna'd everyone in my family. 8. I got a free face mask from work so I took the obligatory photo with it on and then realised I look cross eyed after uploading the photo!
9 + 10. I sat for the whole day and knuckled down to finish my photography coursework for the deadline, I had a lot of snacks to keep me going and many episodes of Doctor who thanks to bbc iplayer. 11. I went to Nando's with my friend Robyn after going shopping. 12. My cat looking thrilled to be with me.

I haven't posted a lot in the past few months because I had so much photography coursework to do and photos to edit and print, but I finished it all and handed them in yesterday so hopefully I will be back to blogging more often now!

I also finally found a website to make a photo grid on that doesn't put a watermark over it so prepare to be bombarded with collages. And lastly, does anybody know why my header turns grey when I upload it to blogger? I have checked the background colour and shadows and borders etc and they all white or transparent, and the header is supposed to be white but when I upload it, it turns grey?

We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love.

Last weekend I went on a lovely walk with my family and friend Shelley. It was my Mum and Dads anniversarey so I met them for brunch at a little cafe and I had he yummiest cooked breakfast with a banana milkshake, and my Mum got eggs benedict which I had to photograph because it looked so yummy!

The weather was so nice (24c) to be precise, It felt like summer! I didn't think it was going to be so hot so I looked a bit daft wearing jeans and a leather jacket, and believe me I was boiling. After breakfast we walked back from the cafe, along the river and through pretty public gardens back to our house and Shelley and I ended up sitting on my bed watching a film because we were really tired.

The night before that I had to been to a James bond themed party at Shelley's house which was really good, so that's why we were so tired!

Daisy Street - Red Cat Shoes

cat shoes
red cat shoes
daisy street
The temptation to call this post 'The Puuurrrrfect shoes' was almost too much but I have resisted! I spotted these beauties whilst in Oxfam the other day, I volunteer there and it's great when we get lovely things brought in because we get first dibs.

They were only £9.99 and as much as I would have preferred them in black, unfortunately whoever donated them clearly liked red because they also donated a pair of brand new shiny red doc martens, or possibly didn't like red and that's why they were getting rid of them, and fortunately for me both pairs of shoes were my size so really it was fate and I had to buy them (making myself feel better here) I will do a seperate post on the Doc Martens, but both pair sof shoes were brand new and these Cat shoes even came in the box with the stickers and labels on! Originally from the website they would have cost £20 so I think I got them for a really fair price. I just love the little faces on them and the ears even move (manually, not automatically... that would be strange!)

Admittedly I don't own a lot of clothes that will go with such a bright colour but I like them non the less and hopefuly I will get around to doing an outfit post with them if you like?

How to take good photos

This is a post that I have been meaning to write for a long time but I've never got around to doing it, but alas after joining in the bbloggers chat on twitter the other night about photography, a few people asked me how I edit my photos so I thought the time has come that I get my butt in gear and write this!

The Camera - I know that nearly everybody says you don't need a good quality camera to take good photos, but with having a dad who is a professional photographer I'm going to say that you do. To have a photo that can be blown up very large and still not be pixelated you are going to need a good quality camera. This doesn't mean that you have to spend a fortune on a DSLR, they're are plenty of compact cameras that can still take equally as good photos. An example is The Canon S95, my Mum uses this camera, and I have used it for some of the photos in my old blog posts. It's really good and I would definitely recommend it!

Camera Settings - To take a good photo you need to know your camera settings such as Aperture, shutter speed, Macro and depth of field. Aperture refers to the set of small thin interlocking metal blades called the 'iris'.  You can adjust the size of this let  more or less light into the camera sensor. Aperture sizes tend to vary from 2.8 to 22. An easy way to remember it is 'the smaller the aperture number the bigger the hole' and vice-versa. Here is a diagram to help:
The bigger the iris is the more light will be let into the camera sensor, this will make your photos brighter. So if you are in a room with poor daylight you want to open the aperture up as much as possible to allow as much daylight to reach the sensor as you can, therefor it is best to set your camera to an F number between, 2.8 and 4. (I hope this isn't all too confusing, I've tried to explain it simply) Where-as if you are in a well lit room o outdoors it is best to have a higher F number such ad 11, 16, or 22, this will let less light reach the lens and won't make your photos over exposed (that happens when too much light reaches the sensor and the lightest parts of the photo come out white)

Depth of field - In basic terms depth of field is how you take a photo that has focused on a certain point and the rest in blurry. If you want your photo to only have a small amount in focus then you need to use a larger aperture (F stop) such as 4.5, whereas if you want all of the photo is focus use a smaller aperture like 22. Here is an example, notice in the photo on the left only the perfume is in focus but on the photo on the right the perfume and the background are in focus.

Shutter Speed - For your photo to be in focus (unless you are using a tripod) you need to use a high shutter speed such as 1/2000. If your shutter speed is too slow your photo will be blurry. The shutter speed can also affect the brightness of a photo, the longer the shutter speed the brighter the photo because again, more light has reached the sensor. If you are using a tripod then you can use a slower shutter speed because the camera won't move at all during the duration of the shutter.

Focus - It is important to make sure that the important part of the photo is in focus. If you are taking a photo of a product, like a lipstick it is important for it to be in focus. Before taking the photo point the camera at where you want it to be in focus and lightly press on the shutter button, it should make a little beeping noise and this means that is has focused there, then take the photograph! If you are taking a close up photograph make sure your camera setting is on macro, this means it will focus a lot closer up and the photos will be sharper too, it really does make a lot of difference.

Lighting - Most photos look best with natural daylight as the light source. If you are photographing indoors find a well lit room and photograph near the window where the light is best, make sure not too use the flash as this can make things look a different colour and create a harsh light.

Background - If you want a certain thing to stand out in the photo it is best to use a neutral background, such as a white duvet cover or against floorboards. That way it isn't distractiong, but if you want to use something a bit brighter, I oftne use a floral bed cover, make sure you focus on the product and use an F number of about 4.5.

I hope these tips were helpful, next time I'm going to do a post on how to edit your photos! So let me know if there is anything you want to know or if you have any questions, I will make sure to answer them all :)

Photos from last Spring

Today I have been editing some photos that I took last Spring when clearly the weather was a lot nicer. I have used the same photoshop action on them all, I downloaded it for free and it gives them all the soft light effect with a faint rainbow to the right hand side, I really love it!

I also spent my afternoon at work, I volunteer in a Charity shop and I spotted two pairs of amazing shoes we have had donated, a pair of shiny red brand new Doc Martens and a pair of red cat shoes (with the little ears and faces on the front) so I'm thinking of buying them on Tuesday, although I'm not decided on the Docs as I like them but they are quite bright!

My room so far...

I thought I would make a blog post of some photos of my new room. It's nowhere near finished yet, I still have a lot of Sam's stuff in here and a lot of my furniture is still in the spare room, but I thought perhaps you would like to see a half-way there set of photos and then the finished ones at a later date!
It's still quite messy so these are just close ups of some of my favourite parts (that don't show the messy bits) In the first photo you can see a letter A, well I also have a B and a K, but no E. I got them from the charity shop I work out but the person who donated them didn't give us the E (I assume they are meant to spell 'Bake' but I really loved them so I had to buy them, especially as they were only 99p each.

I also wanted to say thankyou so much for 400 followers! I never thought I would have this many when I first started blogging, it's nice to know that people want to read my rambly blog posts and look at the photos :)

What I've been up to recently...

Cream eggs were on offer for 8 for £1... so I bought 16! ( I considered buying more to stash but I was embarrassed enough taking this many to the checkout)
I went shopping with my Mum to the Trafford Centre and we got a Starbucks, strawberry cream frappucino for me.
My Mum and Dad built a new chicken coop from scratch, designed by my Mum, for our chickens (including the new ex-battery hens we rescued. A trip to the Garden center wearing my Welly-bobs from Joules!
I went to Styal with my Friend Amy to take some photos for my photography project
The well earned hot chocolate, with obligatory whipped cream and a slice of chocolate cake after we got soaked in the rain at Styal. Getting the job of untangling this mass of Jewellery at work! You jell?
Seeing these funny magnetic finger puppets stuck to the fridge at work, Ghandi and Charles Dickens! don't lie you wish you had a finger puppet of Charles Dickens ;P Goodbye old room! Swapping bedrooms with my brother before he goes off to college after summer. (It's messy because I had already started putting stuff in boxes etc)
My new room, that still has some of Sam's stuff in, like the curtains, and the mess that I have to now tidy up. Would you like a room tour type of post when it's done? Let me know!
Went for a sleepover at my friends house and took a selfie in her mirror. My hair seems to have grown all of a sudden.
A lovely well deserved bubble bath after I thoroughly cleaned the bathroom for my Mum.
